Japan Tax Refund 2026: How to Keep Receipts Organised Before Departure?

From November 1, 2026, customs checks each receipt as one unit at departure. Keep every receipt with its goods, sorted by store and by day.

  • 1 / 11Of the tax-included price comes back
  • 90 daysTo leave Japan after the purchase

From November 1, 2026, a tax-free purchase counts only when you carry the goods out of Japan from an airport or seaport, customs confirms them there, and you leave within 90 days of the purchase. Customs confirms goods per receipt unit, so keep each receipt together with the goods it covers, and sort the receipts by store and by day.

The public pages we checked on October 25, 2026 do not say how travelers should organise receipts. The arrangement below is a practical way to follow the per-receipt rule, not an official requirement. The rules themselves are on the Japan Tourism Agency pages (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026); Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)).

How does the per-receipt rule work?

  • Customs confirmation is made per receipt unit, meaning one purchase procedure as shown on the receipt (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)).
  • If one item on a receipt is not carried out and confirmed, no item on that receipt is tax-free (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)).
  • The threshold is 5,000 yen before tax at one store on one day (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)).
  • Departure must come within 90 days of the purchase date (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)).
  • The store creates a purchase record at the sale, keeps the customs confirmation information after customs confirms the goods, and refunds the consumption tax equivalent, itself or through a refund operator (Japan Tax-free Shop Association (checked October 7, 2026)).

What changes on November 1, 2026?

  • Sales from November 1, 2026 move to the refund method. The consumption tax equivalent is returned after customs confirms the goods leaving Japan (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)).
  • This article covers purchases from November 1, 2026. Purchases up to October 31, 2026 follow the old system and are not described here.
  • The receipt is the unit customs checks, so a receipt that is split or lost affects every item on it.

What does not change?

  • You can buy only the quantity you can carry out on departure (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)).

Which situation are you in?

You bought at two shops on the same day

The 5,000 yen threshold is counted for one store on one day, so the two shops are judged separately (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)). Put each shop's receipts in their own section of the envelope. The rule for what counts as one store is in same store definition.

You bought at one shop on two different days

Each day is a separate count for the threshold, and the 90-day limit runs from each purchase date (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)). Keep the two days in separate sections, and check the earlier date first. The day rule is in same-day definition.

One receipt covers several items, and you left one behind

Customs judges the whole receipt as one unit. An item that is not carried out and confirmed makes every item on that receipt not tax-free (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)). Before you leave, check each receipt against the goods in your bag.

Your departure is close to the 90-day limit

The limit runs from the purchase date to departure (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)). Write the last permitted departure date on the envelope, so a change of plans is easy to check. The counting rules are in counting the 90 days.

You bought gifts for family members

The goods must be carried out by the person who bought them, and customs confirms them at that point (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)). Keep the envelope with the person who will carry the goods. The rules for buying for someone else are in buying for someone else.

Your name on the card differs from your passport

The handling of a name that differs between passport and card (name mismatch) had not been announced as of August 19, 2026, so ask the shop before you pay and keep the receipt in the envelope until the handling is known.

The terminal gives a red result

A red result means you must show the goods themselves (Japan Customs (checked August 19, 2026)). Keep the envelope where you can reach it without unpacking your bag, so the goods and their receipts can be shown together. What the terminal asks is in what the terminal asks.

You are waiting for the refund after you get home

The refund follows customs confirmation, but how many days it takes had not been announced as of August 19, 2026 (refund days). Keep the envelope until the refund has arrived.

You want the refund on a card or a phone app

The listed methods are cash, credit card, smartphone payment apps, and approved sending and receiving operators (Japan Tax-free Shop Association (checked August 19, 2026)). Which of these you can use after returning home had not been announced as of August 19, 2026 (refund methods).

The shop says a refund operator will pay you

A shop can entrust the refund to a refund operator, which refunds the consumption tax equivalent by card, two-dimensional code payment, cash or similar means, based on the customs confirmation (Japan Tax-free Shop Association (checked October 7, 2026)). Ask the shop which operator it uses and how you register with it.

You want to know what the store keeps

The store keeps the customs confirmation information (Japan Tax-free Shop Association (checked October 7, 2026)). How long it is kept, and whether a traveler can request a copy, is not described on the pages we checked on October 25, 2026 (what the store keeps).

The refund is smaller than you expected

Whether a handling fee is deducted, and at what rate, had not been announced as of August 19, 2026 (handling fee). Ask the shop before you pay.

What had not been announced as of August 19, 2026?

  • How many days the refund takes (refund days).
  • Whether a handling fee is deducted, and its rate (handling fee).
  • Whether cash is available as a refund (cash refund).
  • The handling of a name that differs between passport and card (name mismatch) was not announced as of August 19, 2026; ask the shop before you pay.

The pages we checked on October 25, 2026 do not say how long the store keeps its records, or whether a traveler can ask for a copy of a receipt.

What do travelers ask about receipts?

Does the government require a particular envelope or folder?

No public page we checked specifies a container. The envelope is a practical arrangement that follows the rule that customs judges each receipt as one unit (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)).

Is a photo of the receipt enough?

The public pages do not say whether a photo or an electronic receipt is accepted. Ask the store before you rely on one.

Can I add receipts from two shops to reach 5,000 yen?

No. The threshold is 5,000 yen before tax at one store on one day (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)).

Do purchases made before November 1, 2026 go in the same envelope?

This article covers purchases from November 1, 2026. Earlier purchases follow the old system, which this article does not describe.

What happens if I lose one receipt during the trip?

The public pages do not describe a lost receipt. Under the per-receipt rule, a receipt with any unconfirmed item is not tax-free as a whole (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)). Ask the store at the counter whether a copy can be issued.

Does the 90 days count from the purchase date?

Yes. Departure must come within 90 days of the purchase date (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)).

Can a family member carry the goods out for me?

The goods are carried out by the person who bought them, and customs confirms them at that point (Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026)).

Does the shop check my passport?

The customs terminal reads the passport (Japan Customs (checked August 19, 2026)). The public pages checked do not say whether the shop asks for it at the counter.

Can the refund be paid in cash?

Whether cash is among the refund methods for travelers had not been announced as of August 19, 2026 (cash refund).

How long until the refund arrives?

The number of days had not been announced as of August 19, 2026 (refund days).

Do I have to register for the refund myself?

The guide says travelers need to be told how to register for refunds. The method depends on the approved operator or refund operator that the shop uses (Japan Tax-free Shop Association (checked October 7, 2026)).

Will a name that differs from my passport affect the refund?

Whether it does had not been announced as of August 19, 2026, so ask the shop before you buy (name mismatch).
