A purchase enters this system at ¥5,000 before tax in one shop on one day, and from November 1, 2026 the refund is paid only after the customs check at departure — Japan Tourism Agency, information for travellers (checked November 2, 2026).
No government document sets a number of days for the step after that check, so the wait depends on which refund operator your shop uses and how you take the money.
How many days does the refund take?
There is no national figure. The government's traveller FAQ says only that the shop or its operator pays the refund after the customs check, and sends you to the shop for details — Japan Tourism Agency FAQ for travellers (checked November 2, 2026). Global Blue, one of the operators, describes three to five days as usual. That is one operator's description, not a rule of the system.
The fastest case is cash at an airport. Cash Japan and Self Tax Refund hand yen over at the counter on the day, at the airports they serve, for shops whose operator uses them — where airport cash is available.
What is actually fixed about the timing?
The order is fixed, and two of its steps carry a date you can hold.
- Step one, in the shop. The passport is registered while the purchase is recorded, and you pay the tax-included price. This step carries the purchase date.
- Step two, at departure. A terminal reads the passport; Green means you pass and Red means you show the goods — Japan Customs, information for foreign travellers (checked November 2, 2026). This step carries a date and a result.
- Step three, after the confirmation. The shop or its refund operator pays the tax back by the method it offers. The method differs from shop to shop, and so does the wait.
Which of the November changes create the wait?
- The tax moved off the till to a point after the customs confirmation, which opens a gap between paying and being refunded.
- Payment is handled by shops and the operators they contract, so each one sets its own process and timing.
- Some airports have operators' cash counters, where the gap closes on the day, less a deduction: Cash Japan takes 10% of the refund amount — Cash Japan terms and conditions (checked October 25, 2026).
Under the old system there was nothing to wait for, because the tax came off while you were still at the till. Purchases up to October 31, 2026 stay under it.
What has not changed about the timing?
- The confirmation still sits at departure, so no refund step happens before the flight except airport cash at the counter.
- The qualifying figure is still ¥5,000 before tax, read for one buyer in one shop on one day.
- The only length the government writes down is the 90 days for getting the customs check at departure, counted from the day after the purchase — a deadline for you, not for the money.
When does this question come up?
You are paying at the till
This is the moment to ask. Which refund operator does the shop use, which methods does it offer, and how long does it say the money takes? The shop's answer is the one that applies to your receipt.
You open the card statement after getting home
Compare the date with what the shop or its operator told you, counting from your departure check rather than from the purchase.
You had planned to cover a bill at home with it
Build that bill without it. A budget that needs the money by a fixed date rests on a length the government does not set.
A travel page states one number of days for every shop
Treat it as one operator's figure at best. The wait differs by operator and by method, so no single number covers every receipt.
Four people in one family shopped together
Each purchase is registered to one passport and each traveller is checked separately, so a family leaves with as many confirmations as it has passports. Receipts from different shops can arrive on different days.
You bought something on the last day of the trip
A late purchase reorders nothing: the price at the till, the confirmation at departure, the refund after it. The customs check at departure still has to fall within 90 days, and day 1 is the day after you buy.
You want the money before the flight leaves
Only airport cash does that. Check that your departure airport has a counter and that your shop's operator is the one running it; the cost is the counter's deduction.
Nothing has come and you want someone to ask
Start with the shop and the refund operator named at the till, because they hold the record and decide the method. Keep the receipt, the passport details and the date of your check together.
What do the official pages say about the timing?
The refund comes after the customs confirmation, the law sets no rule on how refunds are run, and no number of days is set; when we checked on October 25, 2026 most shops had not published one for their own refunds. Self Tax Refund pays at the airport but publishes no rate for its deduction — Haneda Airport announcement of October 21, 2026 (checked October 25, 2026). Shop guidance can change, so go by what you are told at the till.
What do people ask about the timing?
How many days does the refund take?
No government rule sets it. It depends on the shop's operator and the method; Global Blue describes three to five days as usual.
What is fixed about the timing instead?
The order: the till, the confirmation at departure, and the refund after that confirmation.
Is there a date I can write down myself?
Yes, the date of the departure confirmation, along with the result the terminal gave.
Does the 90-day rule tell me when the money comes?
No. Those 90 days are your deadline for the customs check at departure, counted from the day after the purchase.
Can it be received before boarding?
Only as airport cash, at airports with a counter run by your shop's operator.
Is one refund route quicker than another?
Cash at the airport is handed over on the day. Other routes depend on the operator.
Who should be asked if nothing has come?
The shop and the refund operator it named at the till.
How much comes back?
At most one eleventh of a tax-included price at the 10% rate, before any shop or operator deduction — fees.
What is the minimum purchase?
¥5,000 before tax, for one buyer in one shop on one day.
