When it went differently — what to do now

You opened the box, you walked past the terminal, you lost the receipt, or the money has not arrived.

Covers: Opened or used goods · a missed customs step · lost receipts and documents · money that has not arrived · an amount smaller than expected

If something happened to the goods

The refund rests on the goods leaving Japan with you. Most of the worry travellers carry here comes from the old system, and part of it stops applying on November 1, 2026.

  • If you opened the box. From November 1, 2026 there is no sealed-packaging requirement and no consumables category, so opening a box is no longer the same problem it was.
  • Check if the item is still going home with you. That is the condition the system is built around: the goods leave Japan in your hands.
  • If you threw the packaging away, keep the item itself reachable at departure — a Red result asks for the goods, not the box.

What to do if the paperwork went wrong

  • What to do if you left Japan without the customs step. The refund depends on that confirmation. No remedy after departure has been published, and we are not going to invent one — go back to the shop or the operator named on your receipt.
  • If you lost the receipt, the shop that recorded the purchase is the only party that can identify it. Contact it directly.
  • What to do if the terminal could not process you. Ask the customs staff at the airport while you are still there. Once you are through, the people who can help are on the other side.

If the money has not arrived

  • Check what the shop told you at the time. There is no published national timetable to measure it against, so the commitment you were given at the till is the reference point.
  • What to do if the amount is smaller than expected. Compare the yen figure, not the converted one, and allow for a handling fee whose rate has not been published.
  • Contact the operator named on your receipt. The party that owes you the money is the one that took the record, not this site and not Japanese customs.

Common questions at this stage

I already flew home and did nothing at the airport. Can I still claim?

No route for that has been published. The customs confirmation is the condition on which the refund rests.

Check if using the item disqualifies it.

From November 1, 2026 the consumables category and the sealed packaging requirement are gone. The condition that remains is that the goods leave Japan with you.

Who do I complain to?

The shop or the approved operator recorded on your receipt. Refund Japan is an independent reference and cannot process, chase or pay a refund.
