The Refund Japan app
A planned app for travellers shopping in Japan: keep the list, clear the threshold, follow the money.
What it is for
The threshold is per shop, per day. That single rule turns shopping in Japan into an arithmetic problem you have to solve while standing in a shop: is this basket already over ¥5,000 before tax, and if not, what would take it there.
The app is meant to hold your list, work that out for you, keep your receipts together, and follow each refund until the money lands.
Where it is
In development, with a planned release on October 1, 2026. It is not released yet, there is nothing to download, and there is no waiting list to join — we are not collecting email addresses on this site.
When there is something to try, the store links will be on this page.
In the meantime
The calculator on this site does the arithmetic part in a browser, with nothing to install.
