On November 1, 2026, Japan tax refund registration at 2 Fukuoka stores brought 3 hassles: separate accounts, card names, and waiting until the airport.

On November 1, 2026, travelers from South Korea registered for Japan's tax-free shopping refund at 2 stores in Tenjin, Fukuoka, and 3 things were a hassle. Each store needed its own account, the name on the card caused confusion, and leaving registration until the airport looked even more of a hassle.

Travelers from South Korea did the process with their own passports. An intern at the company that runs RefundJapan, in Japan on a working holiday, guided the travelers and took the photos. RefundJapan is an app our company built.

Registration, in this article, means the step on a refund company's website where you enter your passport and card details. In this record it came after paying at the till, and it happened outside the store.

If you change stores in Japan, do you have to register for the tax refund again?

Yes, at both stores we tried on November 1, 2026. Ohga Drugstore in Tenjin Underground Mall used Ocean Tax Refund and Tsuruha Drug Tenjin-Kita used J-TaxRefund, and each needed a separate account. Two stores cannot show whether every store in Japan works this way.

At Ohga Drugstore, staff showed an Ocean Tax Refund QR card after the travelers paid. Scanning it opened the refund website. The travelers filled it in from the walkway outside the store. The order of events at the till itself has its own article: the four steps at a Japanese register.

Tsuruha Drug came next, and the guide there pointed to J-TaxRefund. Its Korean-language guide said to scan a QR code or start from the display at the store. Around 11:20 the travelers began a second registration outside the store. Different company, different account.

The travelerss were surprised to hear that Japan has several refund companies. Refund methods differ from one tax-free store to another, according to the Japan Tourism Agency (checked November 2, 2026). So the store you pick can decide which website you end up on.

Photograph each receipt and the app checks every shop’s conditions (¥5,000 per shop per day, 90 days) and shows your refund outlook.

What do you enter when you register for a Japan tax refund?

On the Ocean screens on November 1, 2026, the travelers entered or chose 7 things: passport details, the country or region of the refund account, the refund currency, how to receive the money, the card number, the name on the card, and the expiry date.

The list reads quickly. Filling it in did not. Registration started around 10:09, and the screen at 10:16 was still partway through the form. That is one observation, at one store, by one person, so it does not tell you how long your own registration will take.

The screen for choosing country and currency, at 10:16, with the form still unfinished.

Under how to receive the money, the options on screen were credit and debit cards. A different store and refund company may offer something else. The wider picture is in how the refund reaches you.

Can the name on your card differ from your passport for a Japan tax refund?

We cannot give a yes or no. On November 1, 2026, we observed that a card with a name different from the passport worked in some cases and not in others, which confused the travelers. Which service did which is still being checked.

The official page does not settle it either. The traveler FAQ from the Japan Tourism Agency (checked November 2, 2026) says nothing about the name on the card.

That leaves one thing you control. Before you buy, put the card you plan to register next to your passport and compare the two names. If they differ, read what to do when the card name differs from the passport before you reach the till.

What happens if you leave Japan tax refund registration until the airport?

On November 1, 2026, near the machines in Fukuoka Airport's international area, we saw people registering their refund details on the spot, all in one go. It looked like a real chore. They seemed to have skipped registering in the store, though that is our guess. We did not count them.

What we saw does not prove that registering at the airport always works. The official line is that the store tells you about registering your refund method when you buy tax-free goods, according to the Japan Tourism Agency (checked November 2, 2026).

Our traveler finished registering knowing only that the next step was to go to the airport. What the machines themselves do is covered in what happens at the customs terminal.

What would we do differently if we registered for a Japan tax refund again?

We would keep it to 3 steps, based on the 2 stores on November 1, 2026: compare names before buying, register right after leaving the store, and check the refund company at the next store. This order is our own conclusion, not an official procedure.

  1. Compare the names before you buy. Hold the card you will register next to your passport.
  2. Register right after leaving the store. Both registrations in this record happened outside the store, not at the till.
  3. Check the refund company at the next store. If the company changes, expect that you may need another account. At our 2 stores, the travelers did.

We cannot promise these steps fit every store. Two stores on one day is a small sample, and the third hassle comes from watching other people, not from our own traveler's registration.

What did the travelers use RefundJapan for?

On November 1, 2026, RefundJapan was used to find what to buy and where: the shopping list, the store map and the directions. Registration and the refund itself were handled on each refund company's website, not in the app, so the app did not replace either step in this record.

Does the name on your card have to match your passport?

On November 1, 2026, a card with a name different from the passport worked in some cases and not in others. The Japan Tourism Agency traveler FAQ (checked November 2, 2026) says nothing about the name on the card.
