Japan Tax Refund Fee: What Is Not Announced as of 2026?

Six things about the November 1, 2026 system have not been announced as of August 19, 2026. This page lists each one and says where the answer will appear first.

Several of them have confident-looking numbers circulating that do not trace back to any Japanese government source, which is why this page exists at all.

Is the handling fee announced?

No. Whether a fee is deducted from your refund, and how much, is unannounced as of August 19, 2026. Refund operators in other countries typically take a percentage, but Japan has not published one.

Where will the customs terminals be?

Can I actually receive cash?

How many days does the refund take?

What happens if the card and passport names differ?

How should I plan while these are open?

You are budgeting for the trip

Budget on the tag price, not the pre-tax price. From November 1, 2026 the full amount leaves your card first, and the refund arrives afterwards. Treat one eleventh as a ceiling rather than a figure you can count on to the yen, because the fee question is open.

On a ¥110,000 purchase that is ¥10,000 of tax — the maximum that can come back, before anything is deducted.

You are planning an airport connection

The customs step is not optional and its position is unpublished, so it cannot be treated as a two-minute stop you fit into a gap. Give it a block of time, and keep tax-free purchases in hand luggage so a Red judgment can be answered without opening a checked bag.

You are deciding between October and November

October has no unknowns: the tax comes off at the register and there is nothing to collect. November removes the ¥500,000 daily cap on consumables and the sealed bag, at the cost of paying in full first and waiting an unpublished number of days for an amount reduced by an unpublished fee.

For a large single-day purchase of cosmetics or medicine, November is worth it. For one ordinary item, October gives you the same money immediately.

What is settled, so you can plan around it?

• The minimum is ¥5,000 before tax at one shop on one day — ¥5,500 on the tag.
• The refund is one eleventh of the tax-included price. Pay ¥11,000 and the tax portion is ¥1,000.
• The deadline is 90 days from the purchase date to leave Japan and clear customs.
• The ¥500,000 daily cap on consumables is abolished, as is the general-goods split and the sealed bag.
• Above ¥1,000,000 for a single item, serial numbers are registered at the till.
