  • 90 daysTo leave Japan after the purchase

From November 1, 2026, buying an iPhone tax-free in Japan means paying the tax-included price in the shop, having customs confirm the phone as you leave, and getting the tax back afterwards. On an iPhone 18 Pro with 256GB at ¥219,800, the tax inside the price is ¥19,981, and that is the most that can come back before any fee — Apple Japan (checked October 26, 2026).

Before you compare prices, check two things that matter more than the discount: Japanese iPhones of the latest models take no physical SIM card, and the warranty can be limited to the country of purchase.

How much is an iPhone in Japan after the tax refund?

The tax in a Japanese price tag is one eleventh of the tax-included price, because consumption tax is 10% and the tag already includes it. So the refund is a little less than 10% of what you pay. The table works this out for each model at Apple Japan's prices on October 26, 2026, which are shown tax-included as Japanese law requires.

Model (smallest storage)Price in Japan, tax includedTax inside the price (most you can get back)Price after the refund
iPhone 18 Pro (256GB)¥219,800¥19,981¥199,819
iPhone 18 Pro Max (256GB)¥239,800¥21,800¥218,000
iPhone Air (256GB)¥189,800¥17,254¥172,546
iPhone 17 (256GB)¥159,800¥14,527¥145,273
iPhone 17e (256GB)¥124,800¥11,345¥113,455

Prices are from Apple Japan's store pages (checked October 26, 2026). Shops in Japan must show prices with tax included — National Tax Agency (checked October 26, 2026).

Three things can make the amount you actually receive smaller: a fee taken by the shop or its refund operator, which the government does not set (see who sets the refund fee); a fee for taking the refund as cash at the airport, where that is offered; and your card company's exchange rate and foreign transaction fee if the refund goes back to a card.

Where can you buy an iPhone tax-free in Japan?

Only a shop registered as a tax-free shop can sell to you tax-free, and it shows a tax-free sign. Apple has not published any guidance on tax-free sales in Japan on its Japanese site (checked October 26, 2026), so if you plan to buy at an Apple Store, ask the staff before you pay whether the purchase can be made tax-free.

  • At any shop, ask before paying: "Is this iPhone tax-free?" In Japanese: 「このiPhoneは免税になりますか?」
  • Bring your passport. The shop reads it and records the purchase against it.
  • One iPhone is always over the minimum of ¥5,000 before tax, counted per shop per day — Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026).
  • A purchase of ¥1,000,000 or more needs a serial number or similar registered. One iPhone does not reach that line, but several phones on one receipt can.

How to spot a shop that can do it is in which sign tells you a shop is tax-free.

Will a Japanese iPhone work with your SIM at home?

Only if your mobile carrier at home supports eSIM. Apple's Japanese specification pages say the iPhone 17, iPhone 17e, iPhone Air and iPhone 18 Pro activate with eSIM and do not support a physical SIM card — Apple Japan (checked October 26, 2026).

The iPhone 16 is the exception still on sale: it lists dual SIM with nano-SIM and eSIM. If you need a physical SIM slot, that is the model to look at. Whatever you choose, confirm with your own carrier before you buy, not after you land.

Does the warranty work outside Japan?

Not necessarily. Apple's limited warranty says Apple may restrict warranty service for iPhone to the country where the device was originally sold — Apple One Year Limited Warranty (checked October 26, 2026). Plan for repairs being harder at home.

AppleCare+ bought in Japan carries a similar line: service may be limited to the country where you first bought the device, and outside it you may pay shipping, duties and taxes — AppleCare+ terms (Japan) (checked October 26, 2026).

What changes for an iPhone bought on or after November 1, 2026?

The tax is no longer taken off at the till. You pay the full tax-included price, customs confirms the phone when you leave Japan, and the shop or its refund operator then returns the tax by a method it offers, such as a card, a payment app or cash — Japan Tourism Agency (checked October 25, 2026).

  1. In the shop: show your passport and pay ¥219,800 for an iPhone 18 Pro (256GB), not the pre-tax price. Register where the refund should go, if the shop asks.
  2. At the airport: scan your passport at the customs terminal before you leave.
  3. After that: the tax comes back. How many days it takes is not set by the government (see how long the refund takes).

A phone bought on October 31, 2026 or earlier follows the old system, where the tax is taken off at the till. The date of purchase decides, as explained in which system applies to a purchase.

What stays the same?

The basic conditions do not change on November 1, 2026. You must be a non-resident, which means a foreign visitor staying in Japan for less than six months. You must spend at least ¥5,000 before tax at one shop on one day, and you must leave Japan with the phone within 90 days of the purchase date — Japan Tourism Agency traveller FAQ (checked October 25, 2026).

The person who buys must be the person who takes the phone out of Japan. Buying for a friend at home is covered in who must carry the goods out of Japan.

What happens at customs when you leave Japan?

A terminal reads your passport. A Green result means you pass; a Red result means you show the item itself — Japan Customs (checked October 25, 2026). Keep the iPhone in your hand luggage so you can show it if the screen turns Red.

For a purchase made from November 1, 2026 you may open the box and start using the phone in Japan, because the sealed packaging rule ends. Whether the original box has to be shown on a Red result has not been published as of October 26, 2026. Details are in opening purchases before you fly and what Green and Red mean.

Is it still cheaper than buying at home?

Compare the price after the refund, not the tag. Apple lists the same iPhone 18 Pro (256GB) at $1,199 in the United States before sales tax — Apple US (checked October 26, 2026). Convert ¥199,819 at the day's rate, then add back anything that shrinks the saving.

  • The refund fee, if your shop or its refund operator charges one.
  • Your card's exchange rate and foreign transaction fee, on the payment and again on the refund.
  • Duty or tax when you bring the phone home. Your own country's allowance applies, not Japan's; see Japan tax-free vs your own duty-free allowance.
  • A warranty that may only be serviced in Japan, and no physical SIM slot on most models.

What has not been announced yet?

As of October 26, 2026, the government does not set one refund fee rate; each shop and refund operator decides. How many days the refund takes and what happens when the name on your card differs from your passport are also not set by the government, and Apple has published nothing about tax-free sales in Japan. These were checked on the Japan Tourism Agency FAQ for shops (checked October 25, 2026) and Apple Japan's site.

Frequently asked questions
