Which date decides, the day I buy or the day I fly?

The day you buy. A sale rung up on or before October 31, 2026 is handled the old way, and a sale rung up on or after November 1, 2026 is handled the new way.

Under the old handling the tax comes off at the till, so you walk out having paid the pre-tax price and there is no money waiting for you at the airport for that purchase. Under the new handling you pay the tax-included price in the shop and the money returns after customs confirms the purchase on your way out.

Why does the purchase date carry the decision?

Because the purchase is recorded against your passport at the moment it is rung up, and that record is what everything later reads. A departure two weeks afterwards cannot reach back and change how a sale was written down.

What changes for a purchase made on November 1, 2026 or later?

The conditions that open the scheme stay where they are. What changes is the shape of the transaction.

• You will pay the tax-included price at the till, and the money will return after the customs confirmation at departure.
• General goods and consumables will no longer be counted apart, so a mixed basket at one shop reaches the line as one total.
• The sealed bag will go, and the daily ceiling on consumables will be lifted along with it.

Only the first of those changes what you hand over at the till.

What does not change when a trip straddles the date?

• The minimum stays ¥5,000 before tax at one shop on one day, which reads as ¥5,500 on a price tag.

None of those depend on which side of the change you buy on.

When does the purchase date decide the outcome?

Your stay runs from late October into November

One trip will produce two kinds of purchase, and they behave differently at the airport rather than in the shop. Sort the receipts into two piles as you go, because the October ones are finished and the November ones are not.

You are choosing between October 31 and November 1

One day apart, the same item is either discounted at the till or paid in full and refunded later. Nothing about the item, the shop or your passport changes between those two days; only the handling does.

You put an item on hold in October and collect it in November

What matters is the day the sale is rung up, not the day you first asked for the item to be kept. Ask the shop when the sale will actually be recorded, because that is the answer that decides which handling you get.

Your list is heavy on cosmetics and medicines

These are the goods that carry a daily ceiling under the old handling, and that ceiling is lifted from November 1, 2026. If the list is long enough to press against it, the later side of the line is the side that removes a real limit.

You want the money in hand before you leave Japan

The old handling settles everything at the till, which is the one thing the new handling cannot offer. If having the difference in your pocket during the trip matters more than anything else, buying before the change is what does that.

You fly out on November 5 with purchases from both sides

The October purchases are already settled, and the November ones still need the confirmation at departure. Keep the November goods where you can reach them, because those are the ones the terminal may ask about.

You can still move which days you shop

Shopping days are usually the easiest part of an itinerary to move, far easier than flights or hotels. Decide which handling suits you first, then place the shopping days on that side rather than the other way round.

Your departure day leaves little time at the airport

Someone tells you there is a grace week in early November

There is no such week. The line runs between October 31, 2026 and November 1, 2026 with nothing between them, so a purchase is on one side or the other and never in between.

I buy on October 30 and fly out on November 5. Which handling applies?
