Japan Tax-Free 2026: Does a Longer Stay Move the 90-Day Deadline?

The window is 90 days from the purchase date, and moving your flight does not move the date on the receipt. The same line holds before and after November 1, 2026 — Japan Tourism Agency (checked August 19, 2026).

A later departure adds days to the trip. Nothing in the tax-free system adds days to a purchase already made.

Does a longer stay give me more time?

No. The count starts at the purchase, not at the plan, so pushing the flight back spends the same window instead of extending it.

Shops record the purchase against the day it happened, and the customs confirmation at departure is measured against that same day.

What are the 90 days counted from?

• The start is the purchase date, printed on the receipt for that shop and that day.
• The end is your departure from Japan with the goods, where the confirmation happens.
• The confirmation reads your passport at a terminal — a Green result means you pass, a Red result means the goods are shown.
• Each receipt runs its own count, because each one carries its own purchase date.

Two travellers on the same rebooked flight can be in opposite positions: one bought in the first week, the other bought the day before departure — Japan Customs (checked August 19, 2026).

What changes on November 1, 2026?

• The general goods and consumables split is abolished, so one shop on one day is one total.
• The sealed bag is gone, so what you buy can be opened and used during the trip.
• The tax comes back after the customs confirmation, not at the register, where the tax-included price is paid.
• The former daily ceiling on consumables is abolished.

What does not change when the trip gets longer?

Most of the system is indifferent to how long you stay. The lines below read the same on a short trip and on an extended one.

• The goods have to leave Japan within 90 days of the purchase date, whatever your departure plan does.
• The minimum is ¥5,000 before tax, per buyer, per shop, per day — ¥5,500 on a tax-included tag.
• Receipts from different shops never combine.
• The passport has to be presented before payment is finalised.
• The goods have to travel out of Japan with the buyer.
• Separate shipment was abolished at the end of March 2025, so sending purchases ahead is not a way to travel light.

When does this come up?

Your flight home was cancelled

Rebooking changes the day you leave, not the day you bought. Read the oldest receipt first, because that one runs out of room first.

You decided to stay for another few weeks

Purchases made in the first part of the trip have the least room left. Later purchases start their own count from their own dates.

Your assignment in Japan was extended

Eligibility is defined as a non-resident, a foreign traveller staying under six months. How purchases already made are treated if a stay grows past that line is not published as of August 19, 2026.

You moved to a later flight on the same trip

Confirmation happens where you leave Japan, so a later flight simply means a later confirmation. The condition is that the goods leave Japan within 90 days of the purchase date, and what is done beyond that line is not published as of August 19, 2026.

You bought on the first day of a long trip

A purchase made on day one carries the earliest date and the least remaining room. Put that receipt at the top of the pile when you pack.

You are shopping again after the schedule changed

A new purchase starts a new count from its own date. Older receipts do not inherit the new date, and the new one does not inherit theirs.

You have opened and used what you bought

From November 1, 2026 the sealed bag is gone, so using purchases during the trip is allowed. A longer stay makes finishing consumables more likely, and the confirmation can ask for the goods to be shown.

You left some purchases at the hotel

Goods have to travel out of Japan with the buyer, so what stays behind does not meet that condition.

You want to send the goods home to travel light

Separate shipment was abolished at the end of March 2025. Posting a purchase ahead is not an option under the system.

You are counting from the wrong date

Counting from arrival in Japan, or from the departure you originally booked, gives the wrong day. The count runs from the purchase date on each receipt.

You bought something expensive early in the trip

A purchase of ¥1,000,000 or more needs a serial number or similar registered at the shop, and the goods still have to leave Japan within 90 days of that purchase date.

Only one person in the family rebooked

Japan counts per passport at the register, so each traveller holds their own receipts and their own dates. One person's new flight does not move another person's count.

You are leaving Japan and returning in the same period

Each purchase is measured to the departure that takes the goods out of Japan. Going in and out does not rewrite a purchase date.

You want to check before you buy
