Japan Tax Refund 2026: How Much Back From a ¥10,000 Buy?

The consumption tax inside a tax-included price is one eleventh of it. Pay ¥10,000 and the tax portion is ¥909. Here is the arithmetic, the ceiling, and what is still unannounced.

The consumption tax inside a tax-included price is one eleventh of that price. Pay ¥10,000 and the tax portion is ¥909 — Japan Tourism Agency (checked August 19, 2026).

That one eleventh is what the refund is calculated on from November 1, 2026. It is a ceiling, not a promise: whether anything is deducted from it has not been published.

Why is the refund one eleventh and not ten percent?

The rate is 10%, but it is applied to the pre-tax price, not to the price on the tag. A ¥10,000 tag means ¥9,091 of goods plus ¥909 of tax. The ¥909 is 10% of ¥9,091 — and one eleventh of the ¥10,000 you actually handed over.

Dividing the tag price by 10 overstates the refund by about 10%. On a ¥100,000 purchase that is the difference between ¥10,000 and ¥9,091 — nearly a thousand yen of expectation that will not arrive.

The round figures on the right are not a coincidence. ¥5,500 is exactly ¥5,000 plus its tax, which is why the minimum looks like an odd number on a price tag. Any tag amount that is a multiple of ¥1,100 gives a whole-yen refund.

Did the refund amount change on November 1, 2026?

The one-eleventh arithmetic is the same before and after November 1, 2026. The minimum is still ¥5,000 before tax at one shop on one day, and receipts from different shops still never combine.

What changed is when you see the money. Until October 31 the tax came off at the register, so the discount and the purchase happened together. From November 1 you pay the full tag price and the tax comes back after customs confirms your purchase at departure — Japan Tourism Agency (checked August 19, 2026).

What does one eleventh mean for what I am buying?

You are buying one expensive item

A ¥330,000 watch carries ¥30,000 of consumption tax. That is the ceiling on what comes back. Above ¥1,000,000 for a single item, serial numbers or equivalent details are registered at the till — it does not change the arithmetic, it adds a step.

You are buying many small things

Twenty items at ¥1,100 each is ¥22,000, and the tax portion is ¥2,000. Because the general-goods and consumables split is abolished from November 1, cosmetics and clothing in the same basket now add up instead of being counted in two piles.

Most of your basket is food and drink

Food and drink carry the reduced rate of 8%, not 10%, so the arithmetic above does not apply to that part. How the reduced rate is treated for tax-free purchases from November 1, 2026 has not been published as of August 19, 2026. If snacks and tea are a large share of what you are buying, that share is not yet settled.

You are deciding whether to buy in October or November

The amount that comes back is the same either way — one eleventh of the tax-included price. What differs is the timing and the certainty.

Buy on October 30 and the tax comes off at the register. You walk out having paid ¥9,091 on a ¥10,000 tag, with nothing to collect at the airport and no unknowns. Buy on November 1 and you pay the full ¥10,000, then receive ¥909 after customs confirms the purchase — an amount that is a ceiling rather than a settled figure, because the fee question is open.

Against that, November removes the ¥500,000 daily cap on consumables and the sealed bag. If you are buying a large quantity in one day, waiting removes a real limit. If you are buying one ordinary item, October gets you the same money immediately.

You are buying for other people

The arithmetic does not change when the goods are gifts, but the record does. Purchases are tied to the passport presented in the shop, and the customs terminal reads that same passport at departure.

If four people travel together and one person buys everything on their own passport, that is one record and one confirmation — simple, provided that person carries the goods and presents them if asked. Splitting the same basket across four passports creates four separate ¥5,000 thresholds, and a ¥14,000 basket that would have qualified as one purchase can fail as four.

The complication is payment. What happens when the card name and the passport name differ has not been published as of August 19, 2026. Until it is, keeping payment and passport on the same person avoids a question that has no published answer as of August 19, 2026.

Is the final refund amount confirmed?

Two of the six open points affect the figure directly.

  • Whether a handling fee is deducted, and how much. Neither the Japan Tourism Agency (checked August 19, 2026) nor the Japan Tax-free Shop Association (checked August 19, 2026) has stated a rate. Sites quoting a percentage are quoting something other than a Japanese government source.
  • How the 8% reduced rate interacts with tax-free purchases. Unannounced as of August 19, 2026.

Treat one eleventh as the amount before any deduction, and expect the final figure to be confirmed at the airport. We update this page with the date we checked when either is published.

Questions people ask

How much do I get back on ¥10,000?

¥909. The consumption tax inside a tax-included price is one eleventh of that price, and one eleventh of ¥10,000 is ¥909.

Why is it not ¥1,000?

Because the 10% rate is applied to the pre-tax price, not the tag price. A ¥10,000 tag is ¥9,091 of goods plus ¥909 of tax. Dividing by 10 instead of 11 overstates the refund by about 10%.

Is a handling fee taken out of that?

Whether a fee is deducted, and how much, has not been published as of August 19, 2026. It would appear on the Japan Tourism Agency page or via the Japan Tax-free Shop Association first.

Does the same arithmetic apply to food and drink?

Food and drink carry the reduced rate of 8% rather than 10%, so the one-eleventh figure does not apply to that portion. How the reduced rate is treated for tax-free purchases has not been published.

Do I get the money at the register or at the airport?

From November 1, 2026 you pay the full tax-included price in the shop and receive the tax after customs confirms your purchase at departure. Until October 31, 2026 the tax came off at the register instead.

Can I combine receipts from two shops to reach ¥5,000?

No. The minimum is per shop on one day, and receipts from different shops never combine — not even inside the same building or station.
