# Japan Tax-Free 2026: Does Shopping Inside Hakata Station Add Up to ¥5,000?

Shopping that stays inside Hakata Station is counted shop by shop: from November 1, 2026, each shop needs ¥5,000 or more before tax from 1 buyer on 1 day, which appears as 5,500 yen on a tax-included price tag. Hakata Station is easy to treat as one big shop. Amu Plaza Hakata, Hakata Hankyu, KITTE Hakata, Deitos and Ming are the names most visitors have in mind when they say they did their shopping at the station. The count does not follow the building, though. It follows the shop that takes your payment, and where one shop ends and the next begins inside a large station complex is something to confirm at that shop's till before paying. For a traveller finishing a trip in Fukuoka, the working answer is short. Put what you want from one shop into one payment on one day. Hand over your passport at every till. Keep the goods within reach until the departure check is done.

## How is shopping inside Hakata Station counted from November 1, 2026?

Three labels decide every figure: whose passport, which shop, which day.

Japan's standard consumption tax rate is 10%, and it is already inside the price you see, so the tax part of a tax-included price is one-eleventh of it — [where the one-eleventh comes from](https://refund-japan.com/articles/one-eleventh) and [reading a Japanese price tag](https://refund-japan.com/articles/price-tag-reading). That one-eleventh is the most that can come back, before any deduction that may apply.

## Which November 1, 2026 changes matter for a day in Hakata Station?

- **Clothes, cosmetics and boxed food stop being 2 separate categories.** The split between general goods and consumables ends, so everything paid for at one shop on one day forms a single figure.

## What stays the same whichever shop in the station you use?

A scarf on one floor and a box of sweets two floors down become 2 figures whenever they are 2 shops, and neither helps the other reach ¥5,000 before tax. Whether a department store records its different floors as one shop for this purpose is that store's own arrangement. ### A souvenir arcade where every counter sells something small

Six boxes of sweets from six counters make six receipts and six separate figures. If none of them reaches the line alone, the combined total does not help, however large it looks. ### Mentaiko and boxed sweets for people back home

Food in Japan is taxed at a reduced 8% rate, and how that rate is handled under the new tax-free arrangement is not published as of August 19, 2026. A purchase made hours before the flight sits well inside the 90 days. What it adds is time pressure. ### The price tag reads 5,500 yen

Japanese price tags usually show the tax-included price, and 5,500 yen on a tag is the same line as ¥5,000 before tax.
