If the goods and the buyer leave together, the goods have to be beside the buyer at the moment anybody might ask to see them. ## Where does the order actually bite? ### You are closing the suitcase in the hotel room This is where the order is really settled, because it is the last point at which moving something from one bag to another costs nothing at all. Sort the shopping by a single question: could this be handed over if somebody asked to see it? Everything that answers yes belongs in what stays with you. ### You are handing a case over at the check-in desk The instant that case is accepted, whatever is inside it has left the sequence early and has no way of rejoining it on your side of the hall. Agreeing where that somewhere is before you reach the airport is easier than agreeing it in a hall neither of you has seen. ### Everyone in the party bought their own things Each passport carries its own purchases, so the party runs the sequence side by side rather than as one entry in a queue. Each person needs their own goods within their own reach, which is the practical reason not to pour everybody's shopping into one shared case the night before. ### You buy something after the case has gone A purchase made later in the day joins the sequence at the same point as the rest, and it arrives there with an advantage: it is already inside the only bag you still have. On the day itself the item is treated like everything else you bought: it travels with the buyer and it stays reachable. ### Your flight leaves before most of the airport wakes up Nothing published attaches the steps to a time of day, so an early departure runs the same sequence as a late one.
